We will read Alfred Mele’s book Free Will and Luck, Oxford University Press 2006. Mele is a compatibilist and has written extensively on free will and agency, also in connection with neuroscience. In the preface to his book, he writes: “I believe that human beings sometimes act freely and are morally responsible for what they do. If free will is the power to act freely, then I believe in free will. In this book I try to make salient the most difficult salient problems that my belief encounters, and I develop solutions to those problems. I also expose some pseudo-problems along the way.” The book has eight chapters and a little over 200 pages. It will be the main text for our course. We might also read material from other books by Mele, especially his earlier 1995 Autonomous Agents.
